Defending champions Mumbai City FC recorded a dominant victory against FC Goa on Monday in the 2021 edition of the Indian Super League (ISL). The scoreline at the end of the match was 3-0. Igor Angulo scored a brace and Ygor Catatau scored the third goal for the men in blue. Mumbai went straight to the top of the table after a victory in their first match of the season.

Mumbai City FC played like champions from the very start of the match. The men in blue were, by far, the better team. They create way more chances than their opponents, who did not seem to have a good time dealing with that kind of football. However, it took a while before the defending champions scored their first goal on the day.

ANGULO SCORES A BRACE

Mumbai City FC got their first goal through Igor Angulo. The striker took a penalty in the 33rd minute which he smashed into the top right corner of the net. The FC Goa goalkeeper had no chance of saving that powerful strike.

The second goal came in the 36th minute and it was Angulo on the scoresheet again. A calm finish against FC Goa goalkeeper DS Moirangthem saw the defending champions double their advantage going into the break. Angulo was undoubtedly the star of the half with a couple of brilliant goals.

The second half saw the defending champions’ third goal go in. Ygor Catatau, who was impressive throughout his time on the pitch, scored a composed finish past Moirangthem to make it 3-0 in the 76th minute of the game.

Mumbai had 11 shots of which six were on target. Goa took eight shots on goal but only one of them was on target. However, Goa had the majority of the possession with 58%. Mumbai only had 42% of the ball. Goa also had a better pass accuracy rate with 82% compared to Mumbai’s 73%. It was just the final third that could not fire and get the team back into the game.

FC Goa did try to make a comeback in the second half with some good attacking moves, but it was never going to be enough to stop an in-form Mumbai team. The defending champions will face Hyderabad in their second match on Saturday in what potentially can be an interesting game.
