Chennaiyin FC on Wednesday announced the signing of winger Vincy Barretto from Kerala Blasters FC. The 22-year-old has joined the Marina Machans on a multi-year deal ahead of the 2022-23 Indian Super League (ISL) season. The Goan footballer had an impressive debut ISL campaign for KBFC, scoring twice in 17 appearances, last term. The Marina Machans are looking to add some fresh legs into their squad and have been pretty active in the transfer market after two not-so-great seasons. The winger represented KBFC in the recently concluded Reliance Foundation Development League and delivered some impressive performances to help his side secure a runner-up position.

My only goal is to win more titles: Barretto

“I’m very excited to join Chennaiyin FC, a club that has already been successful in its little history. My only goal is to win more titles with the club,” said the 22-year-old. Barretto began his career with Dempo SC academy, featuring for the club in the under-18 league. In 2017, Barretto signed his first senior contract with the reserve team of FC Goa and played for them over three years. During this time he was a key member of the squad that won the 2018-19 Goa Professional League. He went on to make 17 appearances for the club in the domestic league and Hero I-League second division in 2019-20.

Barretto won the I-League in 2021

In December, 2020 Barretto joined Gokulam Kerala FC. He went on to make 13 appearances for the Malabarians in the I-League-winning campaign. And then, in July, 2021, KBFC came calling, and the youngster moved from Kozhikode to Kochi. Barretto’s debut ISL season was pretty good as he scored some crucial goals off the bench for Ivan Vukomanovic’s side. Most recently, the youngster served KBFC reserves in the RF Development League, where he scored 3 times in 7 appearances to lead his side to the final, where they eventually lost to Bengaluru FC reserves.

Barretto is an exceptionally quick footballer

The Goan footballer is exceptionally quick and can play on both wings. He was mostly used in recent times as the right-winger or right midfielder. He was impressive with his passing accuracy of 72%. Barretto can become an effective winger because of his electric pace. He is still very young and has time on his side to learn and move forward. With a bit more composure in the final third he could be a very good asset for Chennaiyin FC. “We are happy to bring in Vincy Barretto who will add youthful energy into our attack. At the age of 22, he is already known for his capabilities. This is a very positive signing for us leading into season 9,” said Chennaiyin FC co-owner Vita Dani on the arrival of the youngster in the side.
