ISL: Chennaiyin FC rope in Hungarian midfielder Vladimir Koman

Indian Super League (ISL) side Chennaiyin FC roped in Hungarian midfielder Vladimir Koman for the 2021-22 season. The 32-year-old is Marina Machans’ sixth and final foreign signing for the upcoming season. The Ukrainian-born footballer started his professional career with Serie A side UC Sampdoria in 2006. He has also represented the Hungary national team on 36 occasions. Chennaiyin under new boss Bozida Bandovic will present fans with a fresh team for the upcoming edition of ISL.

Koman made his senior national team debut for Hungary in 2010 and went on to score seven international goals. He came through the age group categories of Hungary side after delivering impressive performances in the different age category tournaments. He played a vital role in Hungary’s third-place finish in the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup. He emerged as the second highest goal scorer in the competition with five goals.

He also guided the U-19 Hungarian side to the semi-finals at the 2008 UEFA European Championship. “I’m happy to join Chennaiyin because it’s a completely new atmosphere for me and a new experience. I would like to do my best to help the team to be successful and make the fans proud and happy,” Vladimir expressed his excitement on joining CFC.

In a footballing career spanning 15-years, Koman has made 300-plus club appearances scoring 22 goals and registering 23 assists to his name. His high point during the club career was when he featured in the 2010-11 Europa League campaign for Sampdoria. The midfielder scored one goal and provided one assist in the continental tournament.

From Sampdoria, he moved to Monaco but due to lack of game time with the Ligue 1 club he switched to Russian League after spending just one year at Monaco. He joined FK Krasnodar in 2013 where his game blossomed and he became a regular in the playing XI. After another season for rival Russian club Ural Yekaterinburg, he returned home and joined Adanaspor in 2015.

In 2018, Koman moved to Asia. Sepahan FC, one of the most successful clubs in Iran signed the midfielder. He played a pivotal role in the club’s resurgence as the club finished 2nd in the league and qualified for the AFC Champions League. After another year in Iran, he moved to UAE Pro League club Hatta Club.

Koman will join Chennaiyn’s other foriegn contingent- Rafael Crivellaro, Mirlan Murzaev, Slavko Damjanovic, Ariel Borysiuk and Lukasz Gikiewicz.

Chennaiyin are looking to revamp their squad under head coach Bozida Bandovic after finishing 8th in the 11-team ISL last season. Therefore along with some fresh foreigners, they have brought the likes of Jobby Justin, Deepak Devrani, Debjit Majumdar to name a few domestic players.

Jobby Justin is a proven goalscorer in the I-League who was part of ATK Mohun Bagan for two seasons. Meanwhile, shot stopper Majumdar is an ISL winner and Deepak Devrani is also a title winner as he lifted the I-League with Gokulam Kerala FC last year.
