Ipswich Town will be bidding to continue their fine start to the season when they host Bristol Rovers in the first round fixture of the EFL Cup at Portman Road on Wednesday night. The hosts are heading into the match on the back of a 2-1 victory over Sunderland in their Championship opener on Sunday, while the Pirates kicked off their League One campaign with a 1-1 draw against Portsmouth. Both sides failed to progress beyond the opening round of this cup competition last term, with the Tractor Boys losing out to Colchester, while the visitors were beaten by Crawley Town.

Ipswich returned to the Championship after a gap of three seasons, courtesy of finishing second in the League One last term. The Tractor Boys are viewed as one of the dark horses to progress into the Premier League during the 2023-24, and they have lived up to the billing on Sunday. Kieran McKenna’s side got the better of Sunderland, who had reached the playoff last term, thanks to two early goals in the second half through Nathan Broadhead and George Hirst. McKenna’s primary goal would be to secure top six finish in the English second tier, therefore the 37-year-old might opt to test his bench strength against Bristol Rovers in the mid-week.
Bristol Rovers, on the other hand, finished 17th in the English third tier last season, having collected 53 points from 46 games, nine points clear of the relegation zone. The Pirates had a long pre-season this summer, playing eight friendlies, recording five wins, two defeats and a draw in the process. Joey Barton’s side are viewed as one of the outsiders for the playoff in League One and they began their new campaign with a 1-1 draw away to Portsmouth at the weekend. The Pirates took an early lead through Like Tomas’ 24th-minute effort and looked set to take all three points but Kusini Yengi’s scored a 92nd-minute equalsier to share the spoils.
