India will be looking to continue their perfect run in the Hero Intercontinental Cup when they take on Lebanon at Kalinga Stadium in Bubaneshwar on Thursday. The Blue Tigers are heading into the match on the back of a narrow 1-0 win over Vanuatu on Monday, while the Middle Eastern side were held to a goalless draw by Mongolia. The victory helped Igor Stimac’s men seal a spot in the final and move to the summit of the four-team table, having collected a maximum of six points from two games, while the Cedars are sitting at the second-position, separated by just two points.
Coach @stimac_igor talks about the takeaways from the previous game, recent milestones 💙👏🏽 and the big challenge tonight against Lebanon 👊🏽💪🏽

India had to dig deep to secure all three points against Vanuatu, who are occupying 164th spot in the FIFA World rankings, 73 places behind the Blue tigers. After a below par first-half which saw India struggling in the final third, Stimac introduced the midfield trio of Sahal Abdul Samad, Anirudh Thapa and Jeakson Singh on the hour-mark. Although the OFC outfit defended with their body on the line to keep the score 0-0 for more than 80 minutes, captain Sunil Chhetri broke the deadlock nine minutes from time, chesting down left-back Shubhasish Bose’s cross and volleying the ball past Kalotang and into the roof of the net. It was the 38-year-old’s 86th international goal. Meanwhile, the result extended India’s wining run to four games on home soil, scoring nine goals and conceding none in the process.
Lebanon, on the other hand, are the highest ranked team in the tournament, sitting at the 99th position in the FIFA Rankings. However, the Cedars were held to a disappointing goalless draw by 183rd ranked Mongolia last time out. Prior to that, the Middle Eastern side got the better of Vanuatu 3-1, thanks to goals from Nader Matar, Hassan Kourani and Karim Darwiche. With four points taken from their first two games, the Cedars need to secure at least a draw on Thursday to progress to the final. But if Mongolia beats Vanuatu in the earlier match of the day, a defeat for Lebanon will see it tied with the Mongols on points and the decision on who will play India in the final will rest on goal-difference.
