Hull have been largely inconsistent since the start of December, having recorded three wins, and five defeats from their last eight league games. Their previous success came against Blackburn Rovers (3-2) towards the end of last year thanks to one goal each from Liam Delap, Aaron Connolly and Alfie Jones. It was their 11th league-win of the campaign. However, on New Year’s Day, the Tigers suffered their ninth second tier defeat of the season away to Sheffield Wednesday (3-1) despite the fact that Scott Twine found the back of the net from the penalty spot. Five days later, Rosenior’s side came from behind to earn a draw against Birmingham in the FA Cup third round tie thanks to Matthew James Jacob’s 87th-minute equaliser.
Norwich, on the other hand, stitched together a five game unbeaten run at the start of last month, recording three wins in the process. But then, the Canaries suffered back-to-back 1-0 defeats against the likes of West Bromwich Albion and Millwall, before playing out an impressive 1-1 draw with third-placed Southampton on New Year’s Day. David Wagner’s men earned a point against the Saints after Josh Sargent’s 78th-minute effort canceled out Adam Armstrong’s 70th-minute opener. Nevertheless, five days later, Norwich were held to a draw by third tier side Bristol Rovers at the Carrow Road in the FA Cup despite taking the lead through Ashley Barnes’ fifth-minute opener.
