Honduras started off their Gold Cup campaign with a disappointing 4-0 loss to Mexico on June 25, and then four days later, earned a dramatic draw against Qatar at University of Phoenix Stadium. On Thursday, the Maroons took an early lead through Tameem Al-Abdullah’s seventh-minute effort and looked set to to take all three points, but La H striker Alberth Ellis scored a 96th-minute equaliser to share the spoils. That goal allowed Diego Vasquez’s side the opportunity to make it into the last eight of this competition for a second successive campaign. Meanwhile, Apart from defeating the Haitians on Sunday, Los Catrachos will need Mexico to deny three points to Qatar, in order to advance to the quarter-finals of the continental competition.
Haiti, on the other hand, are in a strong position to progress to the knockout round of the Gold Cup, having recorded a win and a defeat from two group-fixtures so far. Les Grenadiers started off with a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Qatar thanks to Duckens Nazon’s equaliser and Frantzy Pierrot’s winner seven minutes into the injury time. But the Red and Blue lost out to Mexico last time out despite the fact that Danley Jean Jazques got on the scoresheet. Despite that setback, Gabriel Calderon Pellegrino still has his team in pole position to reach the last eight, as a win would get them there, while a draw might also do, but depending on the other game’s result between Qatar and Mexico.
