Haiti came from behind to earn a dramatic victory against the Maroons on Sunday. Qataris took an early lead through Yousuf Abdurisag’s 20th-minute effort before former Kerala Blasters FC player Duckens Nazon leveled the score from the penalty spot and Frantzy Pierrot scored a dramatic winner seven minutes into the injury time for the Grenadiers. It was the first time the Caribbean nation had secured a come-from-behind win since erasing Canada 3-2 in the 2019 Gold Cup quarter-finals. The result extended the Red and Blues’ winning run to six games across all competitions, scoring 24 goals and conceding just six in the process.
Mexico, on the other hand, produced a dominant performance against La H in their opener on Sunday, scoring four goals and conceding none at NRG Stadium. El Tri raced to a two goal lead inside the opening 23 minutes thanks to Luis Romo’s brace, before Orbelin Pineda and Luis Chavez scored one goal each in the second half and completed the drubbing. That was the biggest victory for the Tricolor at the Gold Cup since thrashing Cuba 7-0 in 2019. It was a much-needed win for the Mexicans, having come into the tournament following a disappointing 3-0 defeat to USA in the semifinals of the Nations League earlier this month and they will be looking to end a four year trophy-drought at the continental competition.
Haiti probable starting lineup: A. Pierre, Arcus, Ade, Metusala, Christian, Saba, Alceus, Picault, Etienne, Nazon, Pierrot
Mexico probable starting lineup: Ochoa, J. Sanchez, Alvarez, Vasquez, Gallardo, Herrera, Chavez, Romo, Lainez, Martin, Pineda
