Guatemala topped their Gold Cup group for the first time ever, courtesy of securing a narrow 1-0 win over Cuba in their opening match on June 27, before sharing the spoils against Canada four days later and defeating Guadeloupe on Tuesday night. La Furia Azul twice came from behind to secure all three points against Les Gwada Boyz last time out thanks to Rubio Rubin’s brace and Carlos Meja’s winner 15 minutes from time. On Sunday, they will make their first appearance in the last eight since 2011, when they were beaten 2-1 by Mexico despite taking the lead through Carlos Ruiz’s fifth-minute strike.
Jamaica, on the other hand, earneda spot the knockout stages of the competition courtesy of a hard-fought 1-1 draw against reigning champions USA and a pair of dominant wins over Trinidad & Tobago (4-1) and Saint Kitts (5-0). Reggae Boys put five goals past Saint Kitts without reply on Tuesday thanks to Julani Archibald’s 30th-minute own goal and one goal each from Jon Russell, Di’Shon Bernard, Daniel Johnson and Corry Burke. Only United States (13) have scored more goals than Heimir Hallgromsson’s side’s ten goals in the group phase this time around. Meanwhile, it has been over a decade since the Jamaicans battled against Los Chapines in the international stage, when La Bicolor came away with a 2-1 triumph in a friendly in October 2012. Nevertheless, Reggae Boyz prevailed 2-0 in the previous Gold Cup encounter against La Furia Azul in 2011.
