The UEFA Euro Qualifier match between Greece and Gibraltar will take place at AEK Stadium on Monday at 12:15 am IST.
In an effort to bounce back from consecutive defeats in Euro 2024 qualification Group B, Greece is set to host Gibraltar at Athens’ Agia Sophia Stadium on Sunday night. In their previous match, Gus Poyet’s squad faced a tough 3-0 loss to the Netherlands. Meanwhile, Gibraltar, their upcoming opponents, last played a friendly against Malta and suffered a 1-0 defeat.
Netherlands’ right-back Denzel Dumfries played a pivotal role in Greece’s recent nightmare, contributing to all three Oranje goals in the first half as they thrashed Gus Poyet’s team. The Dutch took the lead with Marten de Roon’s half-volley within 17 minutes, followed by a Cody Gakpo strike and a powerful Wout Weghorst header, both set up by Dumfries, sealing the victory at the Philips Stadion before halftime. Greece’s hopes for a top-two spot in the group suffered another setback, despite their earlier successes against Gibraltar and the Republic of Ireland. However, Greece’s promotion to the second tier of the Nations League guarantees them a playoff spot, and they are only separated from the Netherlands by goal difference. Greece hasn’t conceded a home defeat in their last four European Championship qualifiers, but they also haven’t kept a clean sheet at home since 2011, giving Gibraltar a glimmer of hope.
Gibraltar faced another defeat as they journeyed to Malta amidst their struggles in Group B’s intense qualification race, furthering their disappointing campaign. Joseph Mbong’s 58th-minute goal secured a narrow win for Malta, leaving Gibraltar with five consecutive losses without a single goal scored. They kicked off the Euros qualification period as expected, suffering 3-0 defeats against France, the Netherlands, the Republic of Ireland, and Greece. This has placed Julio Cesar Ribas’s team at the bottom of Group B with a -12 goal difference. Sadly, Gibraltar remains one of three teams in the group without a point or a goal, sharing this unfortunate distinction with San Marino and Liechtenstein, the only two UEFA nations they outrank. Despite friendly victories over Liechtenstein and Andorra in 2022, Gibraltar’s Euros qualification record is abysmal, with 22 losses in 22 games. Additionally, they have only scored two goals away from home in Euros qualifying history.
