According to Daily Mail, former Tottenham defender Serge Aurier is close to joining Spanish club, Villarreal. The 28-year-old is reportedly set to undergo a medical ahead of his move to rejoin with his former boss Unai Emery. After spending four seasons with Spurs, the Ivorian cancelled his contract with the club and became a free agent in August. Meanwhile, it’s unclear at this stage how long the defender’s contract will be with the Europa League champions. The high point of his Spurs career was making the final of the Champions League in 2019.

Aurier started his professional career with French club Lens, making 40 league appearances for them before joining Toulouse in 2012 and two years later, moved to Paris Saint-Germain. It was with the Parisians that he won two Ligue 1 titles, three French Cup titles and three French League cups.

Recent stint with Tottenham Hotspur

In 2017, he joined the North London club, going on to make 110 appearances in all competitions. However, he wasn’t able to establish himself as a regular in the starting XI. Tottenham has been struggling in the Premier League since last season. The London club finished seventh in the league and this season, Spurs are struggling with three losses and three wins.

He is also a regular with the Ivory Coast national team, making 70 international appearances since his international debut in 2013. Aurier was also part of the team that won the Africa cup of Nations in 2015, scoring in the penalty shoot-out triumph against Ghana in the final.

Reflecting on his Tottenham departure, Aurier said: “I have really enjoyed my time at Spurs and would like to thank the club and the fans, but I feel now is the right time for me to move onto a new challenge.”

Aurier was also linked with Arsenal, Everton and Real Madrid as he looked for a new club to revive his career.

Villarreal defeated Real Betis 2-0 in the last match courtesy of a brace from Arnaut Danjuma. They are unbeaten in La Liga having collected eleven points from seven games with five wins and two draws. The Yellow Submarines will face Osasuna in the League fixture on October 17 before travelling to Young Boys for the Champions League group stage fixture.
