Although Fiorentina didn’t have a great Serie A campaign, collecting 56 points from 38 games to finish six points behind the top seven, they were brilliant in the Cup competitions. Viola reached the final of the Coppa Italia, but suffered a 2-1 defeat to Inter Milan despite taking the lead through Nicolas Gonzalez’s third-minute effort. After that, Vincenzo Italiano’s side suffered a similar defeat to West Ham United in the Conference League final. Giacomo Bonaventura canceled out Said Benrahama’s opener but Jarrod Bowen scored a 90th-minute winner to break the hearts of the Italian fans at the Eden Arena. Courtesy of losing both their finals and finishing outside the top seven in the Italian top flight, Fiorentina will not compete in the continental competition in the upcoming 2023-24 season.
Parma, on the other hand, finished fourth in the 2022-23 Serie B standings and qualified for the playoffs, where they were beaten 3-2 by Cagliari in the first leg of the semi-final tie, while the home-leg ended in a goalless draw. The Crusaders raced to a 2-0 lead inside the opening half-hour mark at Sardegna Arena thanks to efforts from Adrian Benedyczak and Simon Sohm, but the Islanders came out all guns blazing in the second-half and scored three late goals courtesy of Zito Luvumbo’s brace and Gianluca Lapadula’s penalty kick. Nevertheless, the Emilians are now getting ready to once again start from the scratch.
Fiorentina have signed left-back Fabiano Parisi from FC Empoli on a permanent deal, and will be looking to bring in more players this summer in order to secure a European qualification. Parma, meanwhile, have made three signings this summer, bringing in the likes of Antonio Colak, Anthony Partipilo and Tjas Begic.
