After a gap of seven years, Arsenal will be the featured team in a prominent exhibition match in North America, as they face Wayne Rooney’s MLS All-Star team at Audi Field. In their current pre-season campaign, Mikel Arteta’s team has encountered disappointment, being unable to secure victories in two friendly matches. They settled for two 1-1 draws against Watford and German second-tier side Nurnberg.
Wayne Rooney, the former Manchester United and England striker who has transitioned to coaching D.C. United, will temporarily put aside his team’s domestic struggles to focus on helping the MLS All-Stars secure a third consecutive victory in this high-profile match. In previous years, the MLS squads achieved notable victories in the All-Star games, defeating teams such as Chelsea, Bayern Munich, and Tottenham Hotspur between 2012 and 2015. The opportunity to add to Arsenal’s short-lived misery is one that Rooney will surely not want to pass up.
While still awaiting their first pre-season win after a draw with Watford in a training-ground match, Arsenal’s recent shortcomings were overshadowed by the significant signing of Declan Rice for a whopping £105 million.
