Fiorentina will host Basel in the first leg of their Europa Conference League semi-final tie at Stadio Artemio Franchi on Thursday night. Viola reached this far in the competition courtesy of defeating Polish club Lech Poznan in the two legged quarter-final tie, while the Swiss club overcame Nice in the previous round. Both sides are heading into the match on the backs of not so great results in their respective league outings last weekend, with the hosts losing 1-0 to Napoli in the Serie A, while Basel suffered a 2-0 Swiss Super League-defeat against FC Zurich.

Fiorentina claimed a 4-1 victory over Lech Poznan in Poland and then found themselves 3-0 down on home soil in the second leg, but late efforts from Riccardo Sottil and Gaetano Castrovilli helped Viola secure a 6-4 aggregate victory. Vincenzo Italiano’s side have lost just two of their 12 Conference League matches this season, winning nine in the period. La viola have also reached the final of the Copa del Rey where they will take on Inter Milan later this month. Meanwhile, when it comes to the Serie A, Italiano’s men are occupying eighth spot in the table, having collected 46 points from 34 games, 12 adrift of the top six. Following the loss to league-winners Napoli last time out, Fiorentina have won just one of their last seven matches across all competitions.
Basel on the other hand, are going through a disappointing Swiss Super League season by their high standards, having won just ten of their 32 games to be sitting at the fifth spot in the standings, four points adrift of the top four. Nevertheless, RotBlau have been pretty good in the continental stage, overcoming the likes of Trabzonspor, Slovan Bratislava, and Nice to reach the final four of the Conference League. Heiko Vogel’s side snatched a 4-3 aggregate win over Nice in the quarter-final stage. Braces from Zeki Amdouni and Terem Moffi ensured that Basel and Nice drew the first leg 2-2, while late goals from Jean-Kevin Augustin and Kasim Nuhu saw the Swiss club come from behind to win the second leg 2-1 at Allianz Riviera.
