Sporting festivals take you back in time to the good old days, induce nostalgia and provide something to savour and admire. Every edition of the FIFA World Cup offers just that. From Messi’s wizardry against Nigeria to Siphiwe Tshabalala’s goal for all of Africa, the World Cup has given the world plenty to cherish. The first official World Cup song/anthem was composed when the quadrennial tournament flew to Chile.

From Shakira’s ‘Waka Waka’ to Ricky Martin’s “La Copa De La Vida,” these are the three most famous World Cup anthems:

“Wavin’ Flag” by K’naan – 2010

It’s arguably a no-brainer to start with K’naan; Wavin’ Flag touched a lot of hearts and souls around the globe. Wavin’ Flag was released just before the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and is regarded as one of the most beautiful World Cup songs ever composed. The song signifies what the game is all about and the pride and passion of football fans when they strive for excellence by wearing a first copy or a torn jersey supporting the country they genuinely love.

“Waka Waka” by Shakira – 2010

Waka Waka by Shakira was greatly inspired by Zamina mina. This Cameroonian song represents and inspires audiences never to stop believing in themselves and fighting for their country to win games as the army goes to war on the battlefield. Waka Waka’ was a huge hit, rapidly becoming one of the best-selling singles of all time. Since the time the song was out, it has become a benchmark for all other songs/anthems during the quadrennial tournament.

“La Copa de la Vida” by Ricky Martin – 1998

“La Copa de la Vida” refers to “The Cup of Life,” or the “OG,” as the rest of the world calls it. The song was about joy, pleasure, sheer delight, expressing oneself, and dancing to samba rhythmic patterns. The music positively impacted the fans throughout the tournament and elevated Martin to the big stage.
