It might have been slow and lethargic in the first half, but the second half of Portugal vs Ghana in the 2022 FIFA World Cup on Thursday has perhaps been the best bit of footballing drama the tournament has seen so far. The former Euro Cup champions edged out a resolute Ghanaian side 3-2 in a match that had all the elements to be one of the most memorable matches of the tournament. Cristiano Ronaldo put his team in front with a well taken penalty in the 65th minute, only for it to be canceled out by Andrew Ayew just eight minutes later. Joao Felix and Raphael Leao extended Portugal’s lead with a goal a piece in the 78th and 80th minute but Osman Bukari’s 89th minute finish saw the match head towards a nail-biting conclusion.

CR7 sets another record

Ronaldo created history on the day as he became the first ever player to score in five world cups after his spot kick, but the focus barely remained in him as the match went on. Things got heated in the closing stages as quite a few of the Portuguese and Ghanaian players clashed and the referee did a fantastic job keeping the players in check.

Portugal suffered a massive scare in the final minute of stoppage time. Goalkeeper Diogo Costa had the ball in his hands and he set it down to clear it away, completely unaware of the Ghanaian striker behind him, waiting for a chance to pounce. He did take the ball off Costa but slipped in the process, giving enough time for the Portuguese center-backs to rush back and clear away any danger. After what was arguably the most entertaining match of the world cup so far, here is what fans had to say on Twitter.
