Ferran Torres transfer: FC Barcelona sign young Spaniard from Manchester City

The Catalan giants have reached an agreement with the defending English champions for the transfer of the striker on a five-year deal.

Ferran Torres‘ highly-anticipated move to FC Barcelona was completed on Tuesday, as the young Spaniard left table-toppers Manchester City ahead of the January transfer window. The Catalan giants have reached an agreement with the defending English champions for the transfer of the striker on a five-year deal. The player has signed a contract for the next five seasons, until 30th June 2027, and his buyout clause has been set at a staggering 1 billion euros, according to their club’s website. The transfer comes at an important time when Barcelona are struggling both domestically and in Europe. Xavi Hernandez-led side are currently lying in seventh place, having accumulated 28 points from 18 games and are two points adrift of a top four spot. In the Champions League, they got knocked out in the group stage and were relegated to the Europa League.

“On Monday 3 January, from 11.00am CET, the player’s presentation as a new member of the FC Barcelona first team squad will take place in a event preceding the open doors training session at 12.00pm CET at Camp Nou. Following the training session, Ferran Torres will appear before the media in a remote press conference at the Ricard Maxenchs press room. The event will be broadcast on Barça TV+ and also the FC Barcelona official digital channels from 10.30am CET,” a club statement added.

Ferran Torres, born on February 29, 2000 in Foios (Valencia), began playing futsal at the EPLA school before attracting Valencia CF academy’s interest. He was only seven years old when he first donned the shirt. He had progressed all the way to the Valencia first team and made his Liga debut on 16 December 2017 against Eibar, in doing so becoming the first player born this century to appear in the competition.  However, he had made his official debut a few days earlier in a Copa del Rey match against Zaragoza on November 30.

He made 97 appearances and scored nine goals in the second half of the 2017/18 season, as well as complete seasons in 2018/19 and 2019/20. His greatest achievement at Valencia was winning the Copa del Rey in 2019/20 when they defeated Barcelona in the final.

His growth in the team and the immense talent he possessed did not go unnoticed as the young Spaniard soon attracted the interest of Manchester City and Pep Guardiola. After a whole life at Valencia, Ferran made the switch to England, to play in the Premier League. He was also switched from winger to centre forward on many occasions under Pep. It was in England, he got recognised for his goalscoring ability, with 11 goals in 30 games in his first season, 2020/21. That season finished with his team winning the league and the Carling Cup.
