The Blades collected an impressive 91 points from 46 games, but still finished ten points short of champions Burnely, who had an astonishing season under the stewardship of Vincent Kompany. Nevertheless, Paul Heckingbottom’s side managed to wrap up the promotion with a 2-0 win over West Bromwich Albion late in April with three games to spare. Meanwhile, the Blades are back in the top tier for the first time since 2020-21 and have started their pre-season on a positive note, putting two goals past Chesterfield on Saturday thanks to second-half efforts from Iliman Ndiaye and Ben Osborn. The South Yorkshire club have made three signings this summer, bringing in the likes of Benie Traore and Anis Alimane on permanent transfers, while Yasser Larouci has arrived on loan from Troyes.
Estoril, on the other hand, had a tough 2022-23 Primeira Liga campaign, finishing 14th with 35 points from their 34 outings. The Canaries did leave nine points clear of the relegation zone, but it was considered to be a below par season for a club which finished ninth in the 2020-21 edition of the Portuguese top flight. The club have appointed Alvaro Pacheco as their new manager and the 52-year-old’s tenure began with a victory over Belenenses in their pre-season opener on Saturday. Cassiano’s 45th-minute opener and Francisco Pereira’s winner five minutes from time helped Estorillistas get the better of the LigaPro outfit.
