El Salvador and Costa Roca will be looking to put their first points on board when they square off in the matchday two of the 2023 Gold Cup on Friday night. Both sides suffered 2-1 defeats in their opening match of the competition on Monday, with the La Selecta losing out to Martinique, while Los Ticos were defeated by Panama. Therefore, a defeat for either side and a draw in the other Group C encounter would spell the end for the losing team in this match.

El Salvador would consider themselves unlucky to lose out to Martinique last time out having played the majority of the second half against ten men after Les Matinino defender Jonathan Rivierez received a straight red card in the 48th-minute. Martinique raced to a 2-0 lead inside the opening 16 minutes thanks to goals from Patrick Burner and Kevin Fortune and then held on to the two goal cushion until Bryan Tamacas pulled one back for the La ES in the 95th-minute. The Salvadorans had close to 65% of ball possession, attempted 22 shots, with 11 of them on target, compared to just four efforts on goal by the Matinino. The result extended their winless run to nine games across all competitions, while losing six matches in the period.
Costa Rica, on the other hand, were the favourites to win Group C, but were handed a shock defeat in their opening match against Panama. The Canal Men came out all guns blazing at DRV PNK stadium, opening the scoring through Jose Fajardo’s 23rd-minute effort before Edgar Herrera doubled the lead 22 minutes from time. Meanwhile, Los Ticos pulled one back through Aaron Sanzhez in the injury time. It was a dominant performance from Panama having attempted 15 shots with ten of them on target, while restricting La Tricolor to just four shots on goal in the entire 90 minutes of play. It was La Sele’s fourth successive defeat in all competitions, conceding seven goals and scoring just two in the period.
