Indian Super League club Kerala Blasters has announced that striker Dimitrios Diamantakos has signed a new contract, extending his stay with the Kochi-based outfit until 2024, the club announced on Thursday. The Greek footballer had an impressive debut season in India, scoring 12 goals in 24 matches for the Yellow Army in all competitions and was the team’s top goal-scorer in the 2022-23 campaign. The Tuskers who reached the knockout stages of the ISL for successive seasons for the first time in their history have taken their first major step towards building on this performance for the next season by keeping hold of their top marksman.

KBFC managed to secure a fifth-place finish in the ISL standings, collecting 31 points from 20 games, and Dimitrios played a key role in the team’s 10 victories along the way, as the 20 year-old scored 10 goals and recorded 3 assists in 21 league-appearances. The 30-year-old finished the season as the seventh highest top scorer in the league, just two scalps short of Golden Boot winner Diego Mauricio. Meanwhile, KBFC’s decision to walk off the field during the playoff match against Bengaluru FC at Sree Kanteerava Stadium in protest of a refreeing decision ultimately resulted in the end of their tournament run. After that, the Tuskers once again came up against the Blues in a crucial group stage fixture of the Hero Super Cup but once again failed to get the better of them and couldn’t progress into the knockout round.

Commenting on the extension, Karolis Skinkys, Kerala Blasters Sporting Director, said: “Dimitrios has been a total team player for us at Kerala Blasters, last season whenever the team needed a moment of inspiration, he always came through for us, his experience and knowledge about the game helps lift the team, especially the young talents in the team who learn from his lead. I wish Dimitrios would continue to build on what he did for the club, during the last season. As a club, we believe in backing players who perform and deliver in roles assigned to them. Therefore I am very happy to extend Dimitrios’ contract with the club and wish him all the best for the upcoming season.”

Diamantakos expressed delight at continuing his journey with the yellow army for another season.

”India and Kerala Blasters was a great and unique experience for me, any success that I had during the last season was only possible due to great support from my teammates, coaching staff, and most importantly the Kerala Blasters management, so extending my contract with the Kerala Blasters family was a pretty instant decision for me, I now look forward to come back next season and performing for the team and our lovely fans,” Diamantakos told the club’s website after signing the contract extension..
