The Sky Blues, who lost the promotion playoff final against Luton Town last season, haven’t made the best of starts to the 2023-24 campaign, taking four points from their opening three league-games and are occupying tenth spot in the English second tier table. Coventry began their new campaign with back-to-back defeats against Leicester City and AFC Wimbledon in the Championship and EFL Cup respectively. Nevertheless, the Sky Blues bounced back with an impressive 3-0 victory over Middlesbrough on August 12 thanks to Matt Godden’s 11th-minute opener, Haji Wright’s strike 20 minutes from time, and an injury-time own goal by Daragh Lennihan. A week later, Mark Robins’s side traveled to the Swansea.com stadium and secured a point courtesy of new signing Matt Godden’s 39th-minute opener.
Sunderland, on the other hand, came from behind to secure all three points against Rotherham last Saturday. Having fallen behind to Hakeem Odoffin’s 20th-minute opener, the Black Cats leveled the score two minutes later, through Jobe Bellingham’s strike and then took the lead thanks to the 17-year-old Englishman’s second of the night, seven minutes into the second-half. It was their first victory of the new campaign, following three successive defeats against the likes of Ipswich Town, Crewe Alexandra and Preston North End across all competitions.
