Chelsea will be desperate to record their first Premier League-win of the 2023-24 campaign when they host newly promoted Luton Town at Stamford Bridge on Friday night. The hosts are heading into the match on the back of a disappointing 3-1 defeat away to West Ham United on Sunday, while the Hatters were thrashed 4-1 by Brighton & Hove Albion in their curtain raiser on August 12. The Blues have picked up just one point from their opening two top flight games, while the visitors have played just one match and are yet to open their account since securing promotion last season. Meanwhile, the previous encounter between these two sides was back in March, 2022, in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup. and the Blues twice came from behind to prevail 3-2 thanks to goals from Saul Niguez, Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku.

Chelsea are yet to register their first competitive win under head coach Mauricio Pochettino, having rescued a respectable 1-1 draw against Liverpool in their league-opener on August 13 before losing against West Ham last time out. The Blues earned a point against the Reds thanks to new signing Axel Disasi’s 37th-minute equaliser. And then, a week later, Pochettino’s men were left with plenty to ponder as they were thrashed by the Hammers at London Stadium despite the fact that Carney Chukwuemeka canceled out Nayef Aguerd’s opener in the first-half. World Cup winning midfielder Enzo Fernandez, who had arrived at Stamford Bridge last January for a record-breaking transfer fee of GBP 107 million, missed from the penalty spot before Michail Antonio put the hosts ahead and then Lucas Paqueta converted a late penalty to condemn the Blues to their first defeat under the Argentine tactician.

Luton, on the other hand, had a worst possible start to their return to the top flight, losing 4-1 to Brighton on August 12. Solly March, Joao Pedro and Simon Adingra all found the back of the net for Seagulls before Carlton Morris pulled one back for the Hatters from the penalty spot nine minutes from time, but Brighton restored the three-goal cushion trough Evan Ferguson’s effort five minutes into the injury time. Rob Edwards and co have since had a week off to prepare for their challenging trip to Stamford Bridge, after their home fixture against Burnley was postponed as Kenilworth Road undergoes significant makeover. Meanwhile, Luton have already made ten signings this summer and are looking to bring in few more players before the end of the deadline.
