West Bromwich Albion will continue their preparations for their 2023-24 Championship campaign with a pre-season friendly against League One outfit Cheltenham Town at Whaddon Road on Tuesday night. West Brom are heading into the match on the back of a 3-1 win over Shrewsbury in their pre-season opener at the weekend, while the hosts have already played three friendlies and got the better of Weston-Super-Mare 2-1 last time out. The visitors finished at the ninth spot in the English second tier standings last term and will be bidding to qualify for the playoffs in the upcoming Championship. Cheltenham, on the other hand, secured a 16th-place finish in the 2022-23 League One standings, having collected 54 points from 46 games.

Cheltenham, who earned promotion to the English third tier courtesy of winning the 2020-21 League Two, have managed to finish 15th and 16th respectively in the last two editions of League One. The Robins will be hoping to challenge for a top half finish in the coming season, and Wider Elliott’s men have started the pre-season on a positive note, recording three consecutive friendly wins against Evesham United (2-4 ), Swindon Supermarine (0-6 ) and Weston-super-Mare (1-2 ). Cheltenham have another two friendlies lined up against West Brom and Bristol Ciity this summer before facing Shrewsbury Town in their League One opener on August 5.
West Brom, on the other hand, finished ninth in the second tier last season courtesy of taking 66 points from 46 games, just three points adrift of the top seven. The Baggies, who were relegated from the Premier League in 2020-21, have managed to finish 10th and 9th in the last two seasons. Carlos Coberan’s side will be bidding to challenge for promotion this time around. However, West Brom have not made any first-team signing this summer, which is a surprise. Nevertheless, they have started their preparations for the 2023-24 campaign with a comprehensive victory over League One side Shrewsbury on Saturday thanks to goals from Conor Townsend, Adam Reach and Jayson Molumby. The Baggies will play four more friendlies this month before kicking off their upcoming second tier season away to Blackburn Rovers on August 5.
