Chelsea finished at the bottom half of the Premier League standings for the first time since the 1995/1996 season, having languished at the 12th position last term. The Blues claimed 44 points from 38 league-games, ten points clear of the drop zone. Nevertheless, there is now plenty of optimism around the appointment for former Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino, who is widely regarded as one of the top coaches in world football. The Argentine tactician has overseen a busy transfer window this summer, with the likes of Christopher Nkunku, Nicolas Jackson, Axel Disasi, Robert Sanchez and Lesley Ugochukwu among the notable additions, and more are expected to arrive at Stamford Bridge. Meanwhile, Chelsea enjoyed an undefeated pre-season, recording three wins and two draws from five friendlies. The Blues came-from-behind to earn a 1-1 draw against Dortmund last time out thanks to Marson Burstow’s 89th-minute equaliser.
Liverpool, on the other hand, have to make do without Champions League football for the first time since Jurgen Klopp too charge of the team nine years ago. The Reds had to settle for Europa League spot courtesy of finishing four points adrift of the top four. Lack of depth in the midfield cost them last season, therefore the club has brought in World Cup winning playmaker Alexis Mac Allister and Hungary international Dominik Szoboszlai this summer, while Moises Caicedo could be another to arrive in Anfield. Meanwhile, the Reds had a mixed pre-season, recording three wins, one draw and a defeat from five friendlies. Klopp’s men got the better of Darmstadt last time out courtesy of goals from Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz.
Chelsea probable starting lineup: Arrizabalaga, James, Silva, Colwill, Chilwell, Fernandez, Gallagher, Sterling, Chukwuemeka, Mudryk, Jackson
Liverpool probable starting lineup: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson, Jones, Mac Allister, Szoboszlai, Salah, Nunez, Diaz
