Relegation battlers Celta Vigo will host in-form side Villarreal in a La Liga fixture at Balaidos on Friday night. Both sides are heading into the match on the back of victories in their last outings. The hosts edged past Elche 1-0 last Friday, while Villarreal secured a stunning 2-1 win over reigning champions Real Madrid, a day later. The victory helped Celta Vigo to move out of the drop zone and into 16th spot in the Spanish top flight standings, with 16 points to their name, just one clear of relegation. The visitors, meanwhile, are currently occupying sixth position in the table, having collected 27 points from 16 matches, only one point adrift of fourth-placed Real Betis.

Since the resumption of competitive action following the World Cup break, Villarreal have been in stunning form, having won four back-to-back games across all competitions. Last time out, against Real Madrid, Yeremy Pino put Villarreal ahead, two minutes into the second half, before Karim Benzema leveled the score, on the stroke of half-time. However, Gerard Moreno restored Quique Setien’s side’s lead, three minutes later, and helped the Yellow Submarine secure all three points. Villarreal have beaten Espanyol, Valencia and Real Madrid in their last three league-matches. Seiten’s side are very much in the top-four race at this stage of the season, while they are active in two other competitions, the Europa Conference League and the Copa del Rey.
Celta Vigo, on the other hand, got eliminated from the Copa del Rey ten days ago, courtesy of losing 3-1 to Espanyol in the round of 32 fixture. However, the Sky Blues managed to defeat Elche in their last outing on January 6, courtesy of Pedro Bigas’ lone goal one minute into injury time. It was Celta Vigo’s first league-win since October and the three points helped them to get out of the relegation zone for now. Carlos Carvalhal’s side now only have La Liga football to concentrate on for the rest of the season, which should help them in their battle to remain at this level of football.
