Canada earned a spot in the global event by securing top spot in the CONCACAF qualifiers. The Reds put two goals past Qatar without reply on Friday. Cyle Larin opened the scoring inside the opening four minutes, before Jonathan David doublede the lead nine minute later. John Herdman’s side recorded more than 60% of ball possession and attempted eight shots on target compared to just two by the Asian outfit. It was Canada’s third consecutive victory across all competitions.
Uruguay, on the other hand, qualified for the World Cup by finishing third in the CONMEBOL qualifying group, behind Brazil and Argentina.Meanwhile La Celeste suffered their first defeat under head coach Diego Alonso on Friday against Iran. Mehdi Taremi’s 79th-minute strike separated the two sides at NV Arena. It was Uruguay’s first defeat in their last eight games across all competitions. La Celeste are drawn in a group featuring Portugal, South Korea and Ghana, therefore Alonso would be optimistic about his side’s chances of making it to the knockout stages of the World Cup for a fourth consecutive time.
