FC Augsburg beat Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich  2-1 at WWK Arena on Friday. Mads Pederson opened the scoring for the hosts, midway through the first half before Andre Hahn doubled the lead. Although Robert Lewandowski pulled one back for Bayern Munich, in the end it proved to be just a consolation goal as the home side held on to the slender lead. It was Augsburg’s their third win in 21 Bundesliga matches against the German giants. Meanwhile it was Bayern’s first league defeat of the season and it leaves them on 28 points at the top, four points above second placed Borussia Dortmund.

Bayern had the majority of the ball possession from the start of the game. Meanwhile Augsburg’s game plan was quite simple, sit back and defend and hit the opposition on the counter and the hosts did that to good effect.

In the 23rd minute, Augsburg broke the deadlock against the run of play. Although left-back Iago’s cross was initially intercepted by the Bayern defence, it fell nicely for Pedersen inside the penalty area to fire home his maiden Bundesliga goal

The hosts struck again in the 35th minute to shock the visitors. Augsburg forward Andi Zeqiri stole the ball from Marcel Sabitzer and spread it to Iago on the left flank. The  24-year-old delivered a brilliant cross for Hahn to head home from inside the box.

Meanwhile the celebrations of the home fans were short lived as the visitors reduced the deficit, three minutes later. Lewandowski scored from a Thomas Muller assist to take his tally to 14 League goals for the season.

But the home side remained disciplined in the defence to see off the Bayern attack. Substitute Alphonso Davies’ shot from the edge of the box was fired just wide. Eleven minutes from time, Lewandoiwski’s first time volley from close range was saved by Augsburg goalkeeper Rafal Gikiewicz and then the rebound was fired over the bar by Davies.

We were too careless: Thomas Muller

Towards the closing stages of the game, Jama Musiala tested the home goalkeeper from the left side of the penalty area. The win helped Augsburg to climb above the relegation zone for the time being with 12 points from as many games.

Bayern conceded both goals courtesy of mistakes and thereby Muller, who made his 600th appearance for the Munich club in all competitions, was critical about his team’s performance and expected his team to correct the mistakes and bounce back.

“The first half was bad — very bad,” said Muller. “And in the second half, you could see that we wanted to turn it around, but maybe we didn’t earn that bit of luck in front of the goal. This is a bitter setback in our self-image. I think we were too careless and then it happens that you get punished. Sometimes it happens that you may finish a match unpunished.”
