Bristol city will play Portsmouth in a pre-season friendly match at Robins High Performance Centre on Tuesday. Both sides are heading into the tie on the back of identical victories in their previous games. Bristol City defeated Cheltenham Town 2-0 last Wednesday, while Portsmouth got the better of Qatar FC in their last outing. The visitors have already played three warm-up games, while it would be only the second friendly for Bristol City ahead of the upcoming 2022-23 campaign beginning on July 30. 

The Robins got their pre-season off to a positive start putting two goals past League one outfit Cheltenham without any reply. George Tanner and Tommy Conway found the back of the net in the second half. Bristol City had a disappointing 2021-22 campaign, in the second tier, finishing in the 17th place in the 24-team Championship table. Head coach Nigel Pearson would be looking to make full use of the pre-season friendlies and start their new season on a positive note. After Tuesday’s game, City will take on Plymouth Argyle, Forest Green, Exeter City and Bournemouth before beginning their Championship campaign against Hull City on July 30. 

Portsmouth, on the other hand, have already played three friendlies, registering two wins and a defeat.  Danny Cowley’s side began their pre-season with a 3-0 win over non-league outfit Havant & Water looville, before losing 1-0 to another amateur side Gosport Borough and then got the better of Qatar SC in Spain on Sunday. Alfie Bridgman and a trialist scored at the Pinatar Arena Football Centre. Cowley is once again tasked with leading Pompey to promotion to the Championship when the new season gets underway against Sheffield Wednesday at the end of this month. 

Probable Lineups

Bristol City would be without Alex Scott for Tuesday’s game because the 18-year-old is handed an extended summer break after helping the England U-19 lift the European Championship title at the start of July. Summer recruits Kane Wilson, Kal Naismith and Mark Sykes are expected to feature against Pompey while new signing Stefan Bajic may not get on the field. Pearson is expected to rotate the squad in order to build the match fitness of the squad. As for Portsmouth, summer signings Marlon Pack and Zak Swanson could get a place in the starting eleven. Meanwhile several youngsters are expected to get a chance to impress head coach Cowley.
