Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund have signed Dutch international Donyell Malen from PSV Eindhoven. The 22-year-old completed the mandatory medical at the BVB training camp in Bad Ragaz (Switzerland) yesterday. Malen has subsequently signed a contract with the German cup winners until 30 June 2026.

“Borussia Dortmund are a top European club that are always fighting at the top of the Bundesliga and have high expectations in the Champions League. I can’t wait to be on the pitch with my new teammates to be able to compete with the best. And of course, I’m looking forward to the fans and the stadium that everyone in Europe raves about,” said the 22-year-old.

Last season, the attacker was involved in 37 goals in 45 matches for his club (27 goals, 10 assists). The Dutchman, who was part of the Netherlands squad for Euro 2020, scored twice in 13 games for the Dutch national team in the 2020/21 season.

“Donyell Malen is a player with great offensive potential, who poses a real danger in front of goal. He will bring us his creativity and plays at a high tempo,” said BVB sporting director, Michael Zorc.

Sebastian Kehl, head of the licensed player division termed the Dutch international as an “impressive” player.

“Donyell impressed us with his achievements at PSV. He can be used in different systems, be it up front as a lone striker, as one of two strikers or on the wings. The BVB fans can look forward to watching Donyell,” he stated.

“I’ll take the time that I need”

The Dutch international will be soon linking up with the members of the Dortmund squad including defender Dan-Axel Zagadou, who is currently injured and will be seen in action soon.

“I’m doing well. I’m glad to be back with the team after my holiday. But it will take a while longer for the injury to heal. That’ll take about two or three more months. For me, family was the most important thing in helping me stay positive after the operation. But of course the other players helped me too. That’s not difficult for me because unfortunately I have experiences with injuries. I’ll make sure to take the time that I need to regain my fitness. For each injury, we consider what the reasons for it were and how we can avoid that in the future. There are of course injuries that are unavoidable. But for example, I try to warm up in a way that helps me to avoid injuring myself,” said Zagadou as quoted by Dortmund’s official website.

“I’ve obviously already spoken with the coach. He has wished me all the best with my recovery and said that he knows me as a player as well. He’s looking forward to welcoming me back onto the pitch. I arrived from Paris and am now trying to pass what I learned on to them (his teammates). I see myself as their friend, not as a big brother. If they have questions or they don’t understand something, I’ll explain it to them to help them find their feet. I don’t have any anecdotes (about Raphael Guerreiro). The only thing that you need to know about him is that he’s completely crazy,” he concluded.
