The German Football Association (DFB) fined Jude Bellingham 40,000 euros for comments he made about referee Felix Zwayer following Borussia Dortmund‘s Bundesliga loss to Bayern Munich. The England international has accepted his punishment after being charged with “unsportsmanlike behaviour.” Bellingham, 18, questioned Zwayer’s appointment after some controversial decisions in his team’s 3-2 loss. Zwayer was banned for six months in 2005 after becoming embroiled in a match-fixing scandal.

Zwayer denied Dortmund’s penalty appeals and later awarded Bayern a penalty after Mats Hummels was adjudged to have handled the ball.

WHAT THE DFB SAID

A DFB statement read: “The sports court of the German Football Association (DFB) fined Jude Bellingham with a fine of €40,000 in single judge proceedings after the DFB control committee had brought charges for unsportsmanlike behaviour.”

“The player of the Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund has already agreed to the judgment, the judgment is now final. After the Bundesliga match against Bayern Munich on Saturday, Bellingham said in a TV interview about referee Felix Zwayer: ‘You give a referee who has already match-fixing the biggest game in Germany. What do you expect?’. As a result, he had questioned the referee’s impartiality and ultimately denied it,” it added.

“You give a referee, that has match fixed before, the biggest game in Germany. What do you expect?” Bellingham had said after Dortmund’s loss to Bayern. “For me, it wasn’t [a penalty]. He [Hummels] is not even looking at the ball and he’s fighting to get it and it hits him. You can look at a lot of the decisions in the game,” the young English player added.

BAYERN WIN THRILLING DER KLASSIKER

Bayern Munich defeated rivals Borussia Dortmund 3-2 in a thriller courtesy of a brace from Robert Lewandowski in the Bundesliga fixture at Westfalenstadion on Saturday. The win helped Julian Nagelsmann’s side to take a four point lead over their rivals  at the top of the table. Julian Brandt opened the scoring for the hosts inside the opening five minutes before Bayer Munich equalized through Robert Lewandowski. Although Kingsley Coman put Bayern’s nose in front on the stroke of half-time, Erling Haaland leveled the score three minutes into the second half. Meanwhile Lewandowski converted a controversial penalty to secure Bayern’s win, 16 minutes from time.

Bayern’s win in ‘Der Klassiker’ saw them move four points clear of Dortmund at the top of the Bundesliga. Bellingham joined Dortmund from Birmingham City in July 2020 in a deal which could eventually be worth over 30 million pounds.
