Birmingham City will play host to Southampton in an EFL Championship fixture at St. Andrew’s on Saturday. Both sides are heading into the match on the back of defeats, with hosts suffering a 3-1 league-loss away to Ipswich Town at the weekend, while the Saints were thrashed 3-0 by Liverpool in the FA Cup fifth round tie in the mid-week. The Blues are currently languishing at the 18th spot in the English second tier standings, having collected 38 points from 33 games, just three clear of the relegation zone, but have a game in hand over the other teams in the league. The visitors, meanwhile, are sitting at the fourth position in the table, with 67 points to their name from 34 league-games, five away from the top two.

Birmingham saw their three-game losing run come to end versus Blackburn Rovers on February thanks to Andre Dozzell’s lone goal 13 minutes from time. Three days later, the Blues secured their eighth league-win of the season against Sunderland thanks to Jordan James’ equaliser on the stroke of the hour-mark and Koji Miyoshi’s winner ten minutes from time. However, on Saturday, Mark Venus’ men lost out to third-placed Ipswich despite the fact that James canceled out Conor Chaplin’s opener. Two late efforts from Jeremy Samiento and Omari Hutchinson handed Birmingham their 15th second tier defeat of the campaign. Meanwhile, Venus’ side have won each of their last three home-fixtures against the likes of Hull City, Blackburn and Sunderland.
Southampton, on the other hand, saw their 25-game unbeaten run come to an versus Bristol City on February 14. Though they were quick to bounce back with a 2-0 victory away to West Bromwich Albion, the Saints then went on a three-game losing run. After back-to-back Championship-defeats against Hull and Millwall, Russel Martins’ men were knocked out of the FA Cup at the last-16 stage by Premier League leaders Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday night. Jurgen Klopp’s side netted thrice through Lewis Martin’s opener on the stroke of half-time and Jayden Danns’ second-half brace. Meanwhile, Martin’s men boast the third-best away-record in the division this season, collecting 32 points from 17 outings so far.
