Benfica secured their 25th league-win of the season against Gil Vicente last time out courtesy two unanswered goals in the second half from Chiquinho and Alex Grimaldo. Prior to that, the Eagles secured a narrow 1-0 win over Estoril at Estadio da Luz and thereby ended their four game winless streak across all competition, losing three consecutive matches in the period. Meanwhile, Roger Schmidt’s side have lost only one home-game in the league this term, while collecting an astonishing 40 points from a possible 45 in front of their own supporters thus far. At Estado da Lux, they have dropped points only against Sporting Lisbon and FC Porto, so there is further fear that they might struggle against another of Portugal’s top clubs.
Braga, on the other hand, have the second-best away-record in the league this season, collecting 36 points from 15 outings. Braguistas have won their last four matches on the road in all competitions, scoring a stunning 12 goals and conceding only one in the period. Artur Jorge’s side secured all three points against Portimonense last Saturday courtesy of goals from Abel Ruiz, Iuri Medeiros, Sikou Niakate and Ricardo Horta. The result extended their unbeaten run to ten games across all competitions , winning eight matches along the way and it was their 23rd league-win of the season. Meanwhile, Braga thrashed Benfica 3-0 in the reverse fixture in December last year thanks to Ruiz’s second-minute opener and a brace from Horta.
