The UEFA Euro Qualifiers match between Belgium and Sweden will take place at King Baudouin Stadium on Tuesday at 12:15 am IST.
After securing their spot at Euro 2024, Group F leaders Belgium are set to host Sweden in Brussels on Monday. While Belgium is already preparing for the finals next summer, Sweden needs a victory and hopes for Austria to stumble in Azerbaijan to keep their hopes alive.
Belgium’s Romelu Lukaku, their all-time leading goal scorer, sealed their Euro 2024 qualification with a 3-2 win over Austria. In a high-stakes Group F match in Vienna, Belgium secured an early lead, with Dodi Lukebakio extending it after half-time. Lukaku seemed to seal the victory with a goal but a red card to Amadou Onana made it a nervy finish. Nevertheless, Belgium leads the group with 16 points, a comfortable 10 points ahead of Sweden in third place. Under new coach Domenico Tedesco, Belgium has won six of their seven matches since their 2022 World Cup exit. They aim to progress further at the 2024 Euros. Their final qualifier is against Azerbaijan next month, a team they easily beat in March.
Sweden, in dire need of points, must reverse their fortunes when they face Belgium after suffering a 3-0 defeat in the spring. Their quest for a seventh consecutive European Championship appearance has been lackluster, with just six points collected. To secure a playoff spot and avoid missing the Euros for the first time since 1996, they likely need Austria to lose in Baku. Their performance in the recent UEFA Nations League may not be sufficient for a playoff berth, and they aren’t currently guaranteed a place. Janne Andersson, the coach, is under pressure to rescue the situation after Sweden’s World Cup miss. However, their November matches against Estonia and Azerbaijan might be too late for a turnaround.
Belgium probable starting lineup: Sels, Castagne, Faes, Vertonghen, Theate, Tielemans, Mangala, Vermeeren, Lukebakio, Lukaku, Doku
Sweden probable starting lineup: Olsen, Wahlqvist, Lindelof, Lagerbielke, Augustinsson, Kulusevski, Ekdal, K. Olsson, Karlsson, Claesson, Gyokeres
