Bayern Munich will host SC Freiburg in a Bundesliga fixture at Allianz Arena on Sunday. Both sides are heading into the match on the back of convincing victories in their respective European fixtures in the midweek. The hosts secured a 4-2 win over Viktoria Plzen in a UEFA Champions League match on Tuesday, while Freiburg thrashed Nantes 4-0 in a Europa League game, two days later. Despite struggling to hit the top gear in the domestic league, Bayern have been in stunning form in the Champions League, having recorded four wins from as many games to ensure qualification to the last-16. On Wednesday, Sadio Mane opened the scoring, inside the opening ten minutes, before Thomas Muller doubled the lead, four minutes later. And then, Leon Goretzka netted abrace before the break, to help the Bavarians secure all three points, away from home. Prior to that, Julien Naglesmann’s side were held to a 2-2 draw against Borussia Dortmund in a Bundesliga fixture last Saturday. Goretzka and Sane gave a two goal lead to Bayern, before Dortmund netted twice in the final quarter of the game to share the spoils. It was Bayern’s fourth Bundesliga draw of the campaign and the reigning champions are four points adrift of surprise leaders Union Berlin.
Freiburg, on the other hand, netted four times against Nantes without reply to maintain their perfect record in the Europa League and ensure qualification to the last-16 stage, with two games to spare. One goal each from Lukas Kubler, Michael Gregoritsch, and Jeong Woo yeong and an own goal from Jean Castellato helped the Breisgau-Brazilians secure the win. Prior to that, Freiburg played out a 2-2 draw against Hertha Berlin in a German top flight match last weekend.
Bayern winger Kingsley Coman is unavailable for Sunday’s game because of suspension, while defender Lucas Hernandez is nursing a groin injury and Bouna Sarr is sidelined with a knee problem. Mane is expected to lead the line with Serge Gnabry, Muller and Sane in support. As for Freiburg, Kimberly Ezekwem is out with a muscle strain, while Mauel Gulde, Roland Sallai and Daniel Kofi Kyereh are doubtful because of injuries. Gregoritsch is expected to spearhead the attack.
