A 1-0 defeat against Slovakia during the week increased Azerbaijan’s winless streak in all competitions to 13 matches. They also suffered a discouraging 2-0 defeat at the hands of group leaders Kazakhstan in their opening match. The reverse fixture against their next opponents, Belarus was the only occasion they have been able to salvage anything in the Nations League so far. Consequently, they occupy the last spot in group C3 at the halfway stage with their quest to avoid relegation now at a crucial stage. Their prowess in front of the goal will prove to be a major obstacle against Belarus as they have yet to find the net in the Nations League.

Belarus too like their opponents, Azerbaijan, have found it difficult to get going in the Nations League so far. The two draws against Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan have been the only points they have been able to salvage in group C3 so far. Unlike their opponents though, they have managed to open their goals account as substitute Vladislav Malkevich scored a late goal to salvage a draw against Kazakhstan. This will provide them with something to carry forward into the game against Azerbaijan as their opponent finds themselves struggling in their own issues.

Possible Lineups

For Azerbaijan, the major doubt for the match is availability of defender Maksim Medvedev, who came off injured in the midweek fixture against Slovakia. This will undoubtedly cause some alterations in the plans of coach, Giovanni Di Biasi. As for Belarus, there aren’t any absentees due to injury or suspension. Their manager, Georgi Kondratyev likes to go in with a three at the back setup and is likely to do so against Azerbaijan. Valeri Gromyko was impactful coming on as a substitute against Kazakhstan and may well earn a call to the starting XI.

Azerbaijan possible line-up: Mahammadaliyev, Huseynov, Mustafazada, Haghverdi, Medvedev, Makhmudov, Silvestre, Nazarov, Salahli, Dadashov, Sheydaev

Belarus possible line-up: Pavlyuchenko, Khadarkevich, Volkov, Yudenkov, Shevchenko, Yablonski, Gromyko, Malkevich, Bykov, Bogomolski, Ebong
