Making their first appearance in the knockout stage of the AFC Asian Cup, Indonesia will take on Australia in a round of 16 fixture at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium on Sunday. Tim Garuda earned a spot in the last-16 stage of the tournament courtesy of finishing third in Group D, with three points to their name from as many games, and thereby claiming the fourth and final third-place position. The Socceroos, on the other hand, topped Group A, having taken seven points from three outings. Meanwhile, the previous encounter between these two sides was way back in 2010 in the Asian Cup qualification, where Australia prevailed 1-0.

Australia eased past India and Syria in their first two group fixtures of the tournament, with an aggregate scoreline of 3-0. However, the Socceroos were tested in their final group match against Uzbekistan on June 23 as they ended up sharing the spoils despite taking the lead through Martin Boyle’s opener on the stroke of half-time. A 78th-minute strike from Uzbek winger Azizbek Turgunboev ended the Socceroos’ run of 609 minutes without conceding a goal in all competitions, a new record for the Aussie team. Graham Arnold’s side have been solid at the back and very effective at keeping possession, having the ball for an average of 62.3% from the three league-fixtures so far. Meanwhile, the Socceroos’ attacking department haven’t been firing on all cylinders, often needing midfielder Jackson Irvine to step up and find the back of the net.
Indonesia, on the other hand, sneaked into the knockout stage thanks to Kyrgyzstan, who scored a late equaliser against Oman (1-1) on matchday three and put Tim Gardua in the final third position. The Red and White were comprehensively beaten by Japan in their final group fixture, while Sandy Walsh netted a late consolation goal for Tim Garuda at Al Thumama Stadium. Shin Tae-yong’s side secured their lone victory against Vietnam on matchday two thanks to Asnawi Mangkualam’s lone goal from the penalty spot in the first-half. Though the Red and White are winless in their last eight meetings against the Aussies, failing to score in seven of those encounters, Tae-Yong’s side will definitely put their best foot forward in their first ever AFC Asian Cup knockout fixture.
