Augsburg will host Ajax in a pre-season friendly at WWK Arena on Saturday. The hosts are heading into the match on the back of a 2-1 defeat to PSA Eindhoven last weekend, while the Dutch outfit got the better of Unterhaching 5-3. Augsburg managed to extend their stay in the Bundesliga for at least one more season courtesy of securing 15th place in the standings last term, having collected 34 points from as many games, just a solitary point clear of the relegation zone. The visitors, meanwhile, couldn’t successfully defend their Eredivisie title following a third-place finish in the 2022-23 points table.

Augsburg ensured survival in the German top flight despite losing each of their final three league games. Fuggerstadter returned for the pre-season earlier this month, and have already played four friendlies, recording two wins, one draw and a defeat in the process. The Bundesliga outfit suffered their first pre-season defeat against yet another Dutch outfit PSV last Saturday despite taking the lead through Dion Beljo’s 18th-minute effort. Prior to that, Augsburg put nine goals past Austrian lower division side Kufstein without reply. After the game against Ajax, Maassen Enrico’s men will play two more friendlies against Serie A sides Salernitana and Napoli next month, before beginning their competitive season away to Unterhanching in the first round of DFB-Pokal on August 13.
Ajax, on the other hand, failed to secure their fifth successive Eredivisie title having collected 69 points from 34 league-games last term and thereby finished third in the standings, 13 points adrift of champions Feyenoord. For the first time since 2018-19 de Godenzonen have failed to earn direct qualification to the Champions League group stage and had to settle for a spot in the Europa Conference League qualification. Meanwhile, de Joden have had a mixed pre-season just like their Saturday’s opponents, recording two wins, one draw and a defeat from their four friendlies so far. Steijn Maurice’s side came back from 2-0 down to get the better of German side Unterhaching last time out courtesy of goals from Brian Brobbery, Kristian Hlynsson, Mika Godts, Benjamin Tahirovic and Steven Bergwijn. They have one more friendly against Dortmund in Germany before returning to Netherlands for their 2023-24 Eredivisie opener against Heracles on August 12.
