Atletico Madrid will be looking to make the perfect start to their 2023-24 La Liga campaign when they host Granada at Wanda Metropolitano on Monday night. The hosts are heading into the match on the back of a 1-1 draw against Sevilla in their final pre-season friendly of the summer on August 5, while Nazaries suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Almeria last time out. Diego Simeone’s side finished third in the Spanish top flight standings last term, collecting 77 points from 38 games, 11 points adrift of champions Barcelona, while the visitors secured a return to the top division at the first time of asking courtesy of winning the 2022-23 Segunda Division. Meanwhile, GCF had secured a 2-1 league-victory over Atletico in front of their own supporters in the 2021-22 season, while the reverse fixture in Madrid ended in a goalless draw.

Atletico, who had won the 2020-21 La Liga title, had an impressive second half of the 2022-23 campaign, recording 11 wins, two draws and as many defeats from their final 15 league games. Therefore, Diego Simeone’s side will be hoping to start the new season on a positive note and challenge for a title, as both Barcelona and Real Madrid have their problems entering the new campaign. Colchoneros played four friendlies this summer, recording one win, a defeat and two draws. Atletico have been shrewd in the transfer market, bringing in the likes of Javi Galan, Santiago Mourinho, Caglor Soyuncu and Cesar Azpilicueta, while there has been no big departures, although Joao Felix’s future in Madrid is hanging by the thread.
Granada, on the other hand, won the Segunda Division last season courtesy of collecting 75 points from 38 games, three points clear of the chasing pack. Nazaries returned for the pre-season mid-way through last month and played six friendlies, recording five wins and one defeat. Their lone defeat came against Almeria last time out through Luis Suarez’s lone goal from the penalty spot, on the stroke of half time. Nevertheless, it was a very good pre-season for Paco Lopez’s side, who have also brought in six players to players during the summer transfer window. Shon Weissman, Gonzalo Villar, Famara Diedhiou, Gerard Gumbau and Wilson Manafa have all arrived at Los Carmenes.
Atletico Madrid probable starting lineup: Oblak, Soyuncu, Savic, Hermoso, Azpilicueta, Llorente, Koke, De Paul, Carrasco, Griezmann, Memphis
Granada probable starting lineup: Ferreira, Sanchez, Rubio, Miquel, Melendo, Gumbau, Villar, Puertas, Uzuni, Callejon
