The Champions League match between Atletico Madrid and Feyenoord will take place at Civitas Metropolitan Stadium on Wednesday at 10:15 pm IST.
After a dramatic last-minute equalizer denied them victory on the opening day, Atletico Madrid is looking for their first win in Champions League Group E as they host Feyenoord in the Spanish capital on Wednesday. While Atletico has won all three of their league matches since narrowly missing out on a win against Lazio, Feyenoord has been on a winning streak of six games, including a victory over Celtic.
Atletico Madrid’s 2023-24 Champions League campaign began with a memorable but disappointing 94th-minute equalizer against Lazio, denying them three points. Despite winning only two of their last 11 Champions League group matches, they responded well, defeating Real Madrid 3-1 in La Liga and subsequently beating Osasuna and Cadiz to rise to fourth in the domestic standings. Aware of the competitive nature of their group, Diego Simeone, who faced a rare group-stage elimination last year, is under pressure to avoid a similar fate this season. Losing at home to Eredivisie side Feyenoord is not an option. Atletico is determined to end their longest winless streak in the Champions League since 2009. Simeone expects his team to display the same spirit they showed when they rallied from a two-goal deficit to defeat Cadiz, with Angel Correa scoring twice.
Feyenoord enters their second Group E match against Atletico Madrid with lower pressure, following a 2-0 win over Celtic, where Calvin Stengs and Alireza Jahanbakhsh scored. This marked their second consecutive Champions League win after a long drought. Returning to the big stage after six years, Feyenoord aims to build on past successes in UEFA’s lower-tier tournaments. Feyenoord is in excellent form, scoring 26 goals in their last six games, unbeaten in eight, including a 3-1 win over Go Ahead Eagles. Star striker Santiago Gimenez, suspended for the game in Spain, won’t be available. Overcoming their poor away record in the Champions League is a challenge; they’ve lost seven of their last eight away fixtures, including the last five. However, defeating Atletico without Gimenez could lead to consecutive wins at the start of their Champions League campaign.

Feyenoord probable starting lineup: Wellenreuther, Geertruida, Trauner, Hancko, Hartman, Timber, Wieffer, Minteh, Stengs, Paixao, Ueda
