Aston Villa are back in England following their pre-season trip to the United States and will take play Lazio in a friendly at Bescot Stadium on Thursday night. Villa are heading into the match on the back of a thrilling 3-3 draw against Brentford in their final match of the Premier League Summer Series at the weekend, while the Eagles defeated Bravo 2-0 last time out. Both sides had impressive league seasons last term with the Claret and Blue securing a seventh place finish in the Premier League standings, while the White and Sky Blues claimed second spot in the Serie A points table.

Aston Villa are finalising preparations for the new Premier League season and a Europa Conference playoff. Villa have played four friendlies this summer, recording three draws and one victory in the process. The Claret and Blue shared the spoils against compatriot Brentford last time out despite the fact that Ezri Konsa, Moussa Diaby and Matty Cash got on the scoresheet. Prior to that, Unai Emery’s side claimed their lone success of this month against Fulham thanks to two unanswered goals from Jaden Philogene and Diaby. After Thursday’s game, Villa will play one more friendly against Valencia on Sunday, before beginning their 2023-24 English top flight season away to Newcastle United on August 12. Lazio, on the other hand, returned to the Champions League after a gap of three years following last term’s top four finish in the Serie A points table. The Eagles pocketed 74 points from 38 league games, 16 points adrift of champions Napoli. The White and Sky Blues returned for the pre-season on July 20, thrashing Primorje 5-0 before putting two goals past Bravo without reply, six days later. The Rome club got the better of the Slovenian side last time out thanks to Ciro Immobile’s brace. Meanwhile, last season’s key player Sergej Milinkovic Savic has been missing from the pre-season squad as the midfielder is heading to Saudi Arabia after several years of service at Stadio Olimpico.
