The Champions League match between Arsenal and Sevilla will take place at Emirates Stadium on Thursday at 1:30 am IST.
Arsenal return to Champions League action on Wednesday hosting Sevilla at the Emirates in a Group B clash. Two weeks ago, Arsenal beat the Europa League holders Sevilla 2-1 away. Back-to-back wins over the Spaniards could potentially seal Arsenal’s place in the knockout rounds with two group games remaining. After losing their Premier League unbeaten streak, Arsenal will aim to get a key victory versus Sevilla to boost their chances of advancing out of the group stage.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta heavily criticized the refereeing after Arsenal’s 11-game unbeaten Premier League run ended with a controversial loss to Newcastle. Questionable non-red cards and the allowed winner from Anthony Gordon after VAR checks enraged Arteta, who called it a “disgrace.” Arsenal also slammed the “unacceptable” refereeing standards though the team’s performance was lacking too. The loss dropped Arsenal to fourth in the Premier League but they lead their Champions League group with 6 points. After beating Sevilla away thanks to a Gabriel Jesus masterclass, Arsenal could secure a last-16 spot with another win over Sevilla on Wednesday coupled with a Lens victory over PSV Eindhoven. Despite the refereeing complaints, Arsenal are potentially just 90 minutes away from advancing out of the group stage if results go their way this week.
In his Champions League debut as Sevilla manager, Diego Alonso saw his side initially contain Arsenal before second half goals from Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli gave the Gunners a 2-0 win. Despite Nemanja Gudelj pulling one back late, Sevilla remain without a European victory this season. Their only consolation is Europa League qualification through goal difference over PSV Eindhoven. Since losing to Arsenal, Sevilla are unbeaten in three domestic games but with two draws against Cadiz and Celta Vigo around a Copa del Rey win. Away results have been poor in Europe too, with six draws and two losses in their last eight Champions League road games. Sevilla’s only previous visit to Emirates Stadium in 2007 ended in a 3-0 defeat. So Alonso faces a tough task to get a result at Arsenal, where a draw or win would greatly boost Sevilla’s hopes of avoiding elimination.
