Liverpool’s hopes of winning the Premier League title are hanging by a thread. The Reds lost at home to Crystal Palace in the league, rounding up a week of disappointments. It all started with Jurgen Klopp’s side throwing away a lead to settle for a point at Old Trafford against Manchester United. That draw proved costly, as they conceded the top spot in the table. Liverpool followed it up by suffering back-to-back home defeats.

First, Liverpool lost 3-0 at home to Atalanta in the Europa League quarter-final first leg. They followed that by suffering a 1-0 loss against Crystal Palace in the Premier League. Both results could prove costly for the Reds. They are now on the brink of elimination from Europe and have suffered a big blow in the league title race. At one point this season, Liverpool were chasing an unprecedented quadruple. They had already won the Carabao Cup after beating Chelsea in the final.

Is fatigue playing a part?

However, Manchester United ended their hopes in the FA Cup after knocking them out in the quarter-finals with a thrilling 4-3 extra-time win. Add to it, the latest results, Liverpool’s hopes of ending their final season under Jurgen Klopp on a high look slim at this point. With the club already playing plenty of football this season, Klopp was asked whether “fatigue is setting in” within the squad. “I understand as well, I see the same game like you do. Did Wataru and Macca now play a little bit too much in the last few weeks? Maybe, they were the two most-used [players], especially Macca,” Klopp, quoted on the club’s website, said in his post-match press conference.

He added: “The other guys came back from injury. I would say Curtis today was really good. Dom [Szoboszlai] came back from injury, stuff like this, kind of rhythm. I think for the situation Trent [Alexander-Arnold] is in, that was really good but I don’t think he could now play 120 minutes, let me say it like that. Robbo [Andy Robertson] came back from injury.”

Even though Klopp agreed that some players played a lot and some kept getting “interrupted” due to injuries, he is more focused on finding a way to win matches. “All these kind of things, so a couple of players had to play a lot and a couple of players always were interrupted – that’s a bit the situation. It’s actually not too interesting for us if we find now the real answer. We just have to make sure that we don’t think about where we are coming from – whether they are injured or whether they are not – and we just have to make sure we find a way to beat the specific opponent in front of us. It’s always like this,” he elaborated.

Dropping points over their last two league games could prove costly for them. However, Klopp is determined to stay near the top so that they can take advantage if other teams slip. “It’s easy, I understand 100 per cent, of course you have to ask these questions – what does it mean for the title race and stuff like this. I am not dumb, I know that. The answer is pretty easy: if we play like we did in the first half, why should we win the league? If you play like in the second half, we can win football games. So if we can win football games then we will see how many we can win. We have to be around when the other guys now struggle, if they struggle, so that’s how it is. For us, obviously we have to win football games anyway,” he stated.
