Alisson Becker: We want to win all the tournaments that we play in

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker is keen to win every competition the Reds participate in this season, saying this should be the goal for a “team like us.” However, the Brazilian shot-stopper is not looking too far ahead, as he wants to take it one game at a time. Liverpool have made a strong start to the season, losing only once – last time out at West Ham United – in 17 matches across all competitions. With 22 points from 11 games, the Merseyside Reds are only four points behind leaders Chelsea. Labeled as one of the favourites for the Premier League and Champions League titles, the goalkeeper will be eager for his team to maintain the current level of form.

Besides, the Brazilian also spoke of his delight at playing in full stadiums again this season. “It is amazing,” the Reds’ keeper said in the official Liverpool FC magazine. “I think football without fans is not football. The feeling you have to have your supporters with you on the pitch is fantastic, to have them on our side. They can be an extra player on the pitch for us and also they help us with the way we play, pushing us forward and giving that extra energy for us in the game when it’s needed. I’m really happy to have them back.”

We want more: Alisson

Jurgen Klopp’s side are currently sitting four points adrift of Premier League leaders Chelsea. They have also qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League with two games to spare having taken maximum points from their four Group B fixtures so far.

Besides, the Reds also have a Carabao Cup quarter-final against Leicester City to look forward to, and their FA Cup third-round tie will begin in early January. “It’s about more than that, to be honest. We want more,” Alisson replied when asked if 2021-22 is all about regaining the Premier League title.

“Of course we want to win all the tournaments that we play in. We want to win the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup – all the tournaments that it is possible for us to play in. This should be the goal and the target for everybody for a team like us. But we have to take it game by game and we must be focused on our jobs to do 100 per cent what we have to do.”

‘We struggled to break them down’

Trent Alexander-Arnold has rued Liverpool’s failure to execute their game plan during last weekend’s 3-2 loss against West Ham United. The Reds fell to their first defeat of the season as David Moyes’ team came out on top at the London Stadium in a nail-biting clash. It ended the visitors’ 25-match unbeaten streak across all competitions.

Alexander-Arnold had earlier told Liverpoolfc.com, “Very [frustrating], on all fronts really. We never played the football we wanted to, of course never got the result that we wanted to, so yeah, it is frustrating. We’re disappointed in ourselves. We came here with a game plan, we never executed it at all, we played into their hands a lot, especially in the second half, and got sucked into their game. We allowed them set-pieces, counter-attacks – that’s exactly what they want to do, so we never did what we needed to do to win the game here today.”

On what parts of the game plan the team were unable to execute, Alexander-Arnold said, “Breaking them down really. They defended really well. We struggled to break them down and didn’t create too many chances. All in all, it was a bit slow, a bit lethargic from us. We played some decent football in the first half but coming out in the second half we never played the way we needed to win the game.”
