Ajax will host Rangers in their opening match of the Champions League group stage campaign at the Amsterdam Arena on Wednesday. The hosts are heading into the match on the back of a dominant 4-0 victory over Cambur in an Eredivise fixture last Saturday. Rangers, meanwhile, suffered a humiliating 4-0 defeat at Celtic in their Scottish Premiership match on the same day. Ajax has made a perfect start to their Eredivisie title-defence, winning all of their opening five games to be sitting at the summit of the points table. In their last match against Cambuur, Steven Bergwijn netted a brace before Devyne Rensch and Mohammed Kudus scored one goal each to secure the win for the sons of gods. Meanwhile Alfred Schreuder’s side are set to face tougher challenges in Group A of the Champions League, featuring the likes of Liverpool, Rangers and Napoli.
Rangers, on the other hand, have won four of their opening six Scottish Premiership fixtures this term to be sitting at the second position, five points behind leaders Celtic. In their recent match against the defending champions Celtic, the Teddy Bears conceded four times courtesy of a brace from Liel Abada and one goal each from Jota and David turnbull. Giovanni van Bronckhorts’s side had reached the final of the Europa League last term and have won each of their previous two visits to Netherlands, including a narrow 1-0 second-leg win over PSV in the playoff tie last month.

Ajax left-back Owen Wijndal is sidelined with an ankle injury, while midfielder Mohamed Ihattaren is also not fit for Wednesday’s game. Last game’s double-goal hero Bergwijan is expected to partner Brian Brobbey and Dusan Tadic up front. As for Rangers, forward Tom Lawrence is nursing a knee injury. Central defender Ben Davies, John Scouttar and Filip Helander are also out with injuries.
