Dan Burn has insisted Newcastle United are in no mood to stop now after achieving the magic 40-point mark following the 1-0 win over Crystal Palace on Wednesday. The Magpies registered their third consecutive Premier League victory courtesy of Miguel Almiron’s first half strike and they are now 15 points clear of the drop zone. Meanwhile it was Eddie Howe’s side’s sixth home win on the trot. After a disastrous start to the season, that saw them not winning a game till December, the Magpies are now placed 11th in the standings.

Defender Burn said: “Well 40 is the magic number, but until it’s done, we will just keep going. We don’t want to stop here, we want to go as high as we can. I think it’s some achievement from where we were when the ownership came in to where we are now.”

The takeover by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) in October along with the mastermind of the English tactician Howe has helped the team to turn their fortunes. The Magpies have won nine of their last 14 league games to find themselves level on points with 10th-placed Brighton, who have a better goal difference.

Burn joined the club in the January transfer window, and the big centre-back has quickly established himself as a vital cog in the team. The 29-year-old made the defence solid and has been a pillar in the back line with his 1.98m tall figure.

He said: “I love playing at home. It feels like what it used to be like when I was a kid.”

Newcastle have been producing multiple heroes on different occasions. Last Sunday, Bruno Guimaraes scored a double to secure all three points against the Foxes. The Brazilian midfielder netted a 95th minute winner to clinch a victory.

Howe’s side is built around a strong defense which has managed to keep five clean sheets in their last 14 games. There is very little emphasis on keeping the ball possession, they are happy to sit back and hit the opposition on the counter-attack.

With five more games to go, the Magpies are well on course to achieve a top-ten finish, which would be a remarkable achievement, considering the disastrous start they had.
