Pep Guardiola insisted the Premier League title race is far from over after Manchester city defeated Brentford 1-0 and opened up an eight point lead at the summit. Phil Foden’s first half goal was enough for the defending champions to secure a 10th straight league win and tighten the grip on top spot after Chelsea and Liverpool faltered. Liverpool were defeated by Leicester City while Chelsea were held to a 1-1 draw against Brighton courtesy of a stoppage time equalizer by Danny Welbeck.

The win helped City to 50 points from 20 games and the Spanish tactician said: “There are 54 points to play for and so many more tough teams to play so when you put it in that perspective eight points is ridiculous. We were 4-0 up and in 20 minutes it was 4-3 three, four days ago [against Leicester] so all of you, thank you for your nice words because we win but I’m not going to believe any of the words you are going to say about you think it is already done.”

“The teams we’re competing with, Chelsea and Liverpool, are more than exceptional. One is champions of Europe and Liverpool have been our big rivals in the last three, four years. And we have this distance not because they drop points but because we win 10 games in a row.”

“When you win 30 points from 30 you can be in a good position but it is 54 points still to play and we are just thinking of Arsenal, Chelsea and Southampton the next three games we have. Unfortunately we have to come back soon here to London, play Arsenal at 12.30.”

City travel to Arsenal

Manchester City will next travel to Arsenal on Saturday. The Gunners are in sublime form, having won their last five games in all competitions, scoring an incredible 19 goals. Mikel Arteta’s side are fourth in the table with 35 points.

“Maybe right now one of the best teams, in top form. It is Arsenal maybe in their best moment in the last four, five or six years. Everyone can agree or disagree with me but it’s another one so now rest, recover the people and try to do it.”

Foden scored the winner in the 16th minute from Kevin de Bruyne’s cross. The 21-year-old midfielder along with Jack Grealish were dropped for the Match against Newcastle after they were pictured on a night out following the 7-0 home win over Leeds United.

Both of them were back in the starting line-up and Foden gave an impressive performance. Guardiola added: “Phil has always been outstanding. He’s a guy who can play in different positions at an exceptional level.

“We had no doubts about that. Did he have anything to prove? Absolutely not.”
