Manchester City defeated Brentford 1-0 in the Premier League fixture at the Brentford Community stadium on Wednesday to take an eight point lead at the summit. Phil Foden scored the lone goal of the match as the visitors secured their 10th League win in a row. Foden hadn’t started since Guardiola had warned his players about their off-field behavior after both him and Jack Grealish were reportedly pictured in a nightclub and then dropped for the game at Newcastle. Meanwhile it was yet another fighting performance from Brentford.

The home side had a positive start to the game, testing the Manchester City defence on multiple occasions inside the opening 10 minutes. Referee David Coote played a fine advantage after Ruben Dias had fouled Wissa as Franck Onyeka was played through by Shandon Baptiste only for him to shoot straight at Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson.

Ederson was called into action yet again as he made a quick reflex save to prevent an own goal from Dias as Wissa’s low cross was inadvertently diverted towards his own goal by the Portuguese defender. And then, Wissa’s effort from a corner bounced over both Ederson and Ivan Toney before Joao Cancelo cleared it off the line.

After the initial burst from the hosts, Manchester City slowly started to get into the game and Thomas Frank’s side were punished for not taking their chances. In the 16th minute, Kevin de Bruyne sent in a cross from the right to Foden at the near post. The English midfielder nicely slotted the ball past Alvaro Fernandez and into the goal to give the lead to Guardiola’s side.

There was a lengthy VAR check for a potential offside but the youngster had managed to stay just behind the last defender and the goal stood. After the goal it was more of a cagey affair with both goalkeepers having to do very little.

Manchester City move to 50 points

Mads Sorensen blocked Gabriel Jesus’ shot and Fernandez made a decent save from Dias’ drive. On the stroke of halftime, City came close to doubling their lead from a similar move that broke the deadlock. Jesus flicked the ball back for De Bruyne, whose first time cross from the right found the head of Foden inside the box, but this time the 21-year-old’s effort glanced just wide of the post.

After the break, Foden once again put the ball in the back of the net, but was flagged offside. De Bruyne’s shot from outside the box smacked the base of the post. Aymeric Laporte thought he had scored City’s second three minutes from time as he directed De Bruyne’s free-kick into the goal. But the VAR intervened and the Spaniard was adjudged offside.

The win helped City to 50 points from 20 games while Brentford are placed at the 14th spot with 20 points from 18 games.
