Badminton as a sport has a long history in Singapore. The sport has become popular in the nation after the popular ‘club’ culture of Singapore. Part of this dedication towards the sport was reaped when Singapore started showing results in the 1980s. However, it was the Commonwealth Games 2002 which did a complete turnaround for the nation in sports. Coming to the present day, in 2021 the entire rubric of badminton has been redefined by ace shuttlers Loh Kean Yew and Danny Bawa Christnanta. Loh in particular has become a seasoned player after a lot of international success for his country.

Loh is a Malaysian-born Singaporean badminton player. He had relatively decent success between 2014 to 2020 when it came to the international stage. Loh competed for Singapore at the Southeast Asian Games, winning bronze in the men’s singles competition in 2015. In addition, he triumphed in Malaysia International in 2017 and Singapore International in 2014 and 2017. He participated in the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. Loh lost to Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia for the men’s singles gold medal at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games, but he still took home silver.

Amongst all these relative and mild successes came the year 2021 when Lee experienced a great amount of success and good fortune. It started with his qualifications for the 2020 Summer Olympics after being placed in 18th place in the men’s singles rankings. Although he was eliminated in the first round itself, nevertheless he was the flag bearer of the country in the Parade of the Nations. In the same year, he won a BWF Super 500 tournament for the first time. However, the cherry on the cake has to be the 2021 BWF World Championships men’s singles tournament in Spain. The unseeded Loh was pitted against reigning Olympic champion and second-seed Viktor Axelsen which the latter won. From there on, Loh has already piled up three more medals in the Commonwealth Games, Badminton Asia Team event and Asian championships.
