World no.1 Viktor Axelsen to compete in the Singapore Open

Viktor Axelsen has confirmed that he will compete in the 2023 Singapore Badminton Open in June, giving fans in Singapore the opportunity to see the top-ranked player in the world in action. The tournament’s organizers stated in a press release on Thursday (Mar 30). It said that the reigning world and Olympic champion will head “what is anticipated to be the strongest player field in the tournament’s history.”

Axelsen expressed excitement about competing in Singapore, saying, “I love competing in Singapore, the fans are always fantastic. I regrettably was unable to participate in the Singapore Badminton Open last year. But this year I’m looking forward to going back and winning the event this time.”

Moreover by winning this event he set a record of becoming the first male athlete to win the All-England Open. The BWF World Championships and the season-ending BWF World Tour Finals are all in the same year.

Additionally, Viktor Axelsen went on a 39-match winning streak that was ended by Singaporean Loh Kean Yew at a tournament held in Dane’s hometown. This year, Axelsen continued his winning ways by winning the Malaysia Open in January. A week later, Kunlavut defeated him in the India Open championship match.

Anthony Sinisuka Ginting of Indonesia won the men’s singles competition at the Singapore Badminton Open last year. Whereas PV Sindhu of India took home the women’s singles crown. Ginting extended Singapore’s 60-year wait for a men’s singles champion at the competition by defeating hometown favorite Loh in the semi-finals.

Singapore Open 2023

The Singapore Badminton Open, a Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Tour Super 750 series competition. It will put the top 10 doubles teams and top 15 singles players against one another for top honors and a share of the US$850,000 prize pool, according to the event’s organizers.

The competition was a Super 500 event last year with a smaller prize pool of US$370,000 and fewer ranking points available. The men’s singles match will also feature Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn. He is the seventh-ranked player in the world, and the women’s singles match will feature Ratchanok Intanon. Ratchanok Intanon is the eighth-ranked player in the world.

Badminton associations have until April 25 to submit their entries, and the competition will take place at the Singapore Indoor Stadium from June 6 to June 11. Soon, the players’ names will be disclosed. A list of Singaporean players who will participate in the Open will be provided by the Singapore Badminton Association.
