Kenta Nishimoto is a Japanese badminton player who competes in the men’s singles category. He won a silver medal in the men’s singles at the 2017 Summer Universiade and a bronze medal at the 2018 Asian Games. Nishimoto was part of Japan’s winning team at the 2012 Asian Junior Championships and at the 2017 Asia Mixed Team Championships.

Nishimoto’s journey started with the Russian Open Grand Prix tournament where he became the runner-up for the first time. Subsequently, Nishimoto participated in the 2017 Summer Universiade, held in Taipei where he lost to Wang Tzu-Wei in the final. Next year, in 2018 he attained the peak in his career so far when he reached the BWF World Tour Final, the 2018 Malaysia Masters. Although he lost to Viktor Axelsen, the Japanese shuttler put up a spirited performance to win the hearts of everyone. Later in August, he participated in the 2018 Asian Games where he lost to home favourites Jonatan Christie. Nishimoto kicked off the 2019 season similarly when he made it to his first final, the German Open. Again he lost to compatriot Kento Momota in straight games. This was followed by the loss in the 2020 Thailand Masters against Ng Ka Long of Hong Kong.

Subsequently, the COVID pandemic stuck the entire world, and badminton proceedings were stopped. Nevertheless, Nishimoto did not lose hope and continued his training. Subsequently, in September 2022 post the pandemic, Nishimoto made it to his 7th Career final. This final came at the most crucial junctures and in front of his home crowd, i.e. the Japan Open. In the final, he beat 6th ranked and 3rd seed Chou Tien Chen. Post the match, Nishimoto stated that he was “really happy” and also “a bit relieved” after clinching the first title. Kenta Nishimoto has set an example that perseverance is the only key to success at the highest level. Now, with the China Masters in full swing, his opponents will be weary of the fighting spirit of the young Japanese.
